‘SupaStore Shut Up’ took place in February 2023 at Turf Projects in the Whitgift Shopping Centre in Croydon. Developed in collaboration with sculpture students from the Royal College of Art, the project operated as an open platform for student participation within the SupaStore framework.
The installation emerged through a collaborative process in which students produced multiples and artworks that were incorporated into the display alongside works from Turf Projects and invited contributors. In this sense, the project reflected the collective ethos that has long been central to SupaStore.
Staged within an almost abandoned, 1980’s, formerly thriving shopping centre, during times of broader undergoing shifts in retail activity, the project responded to the phenomenon of closing shops and changing high street economies. Through a temporary installation that opened and closed within a short timeframe, SupaStore Shut Up reimagined the retail space as a site for artistic production, experimentation and exchange.
