‘SupaStore Southside, Slingbacks and Sunshine’ opened at the South London Gallery in 2021. Across the first floor exhibition rooms of the South London Gallery’s Fire Station, Sarah Staton created an environment where artworks circulated in a maximalist exhibition display that references the spatial language of retail.

The exhibition brought together works by around sixty artists working across ceramics, textiles, printed matter, sculpture and artist editions. Installed across shelves, tables and display structures that recalled shop interiors, the presentation encouraged viewers to move through the space as they might browse through a store.

Within this institutional setting, SupaStore operated both as an exhibition and a social framework, as we began to open up, post pandemic. The project foregrounded networks of collaboration between artists, institutions and audiences while exploring how artworks circulate through systems of production, display and exchange.
